Samoa extended school hours in government schools

Date modified: 12 November 2024

The study aims to assess the effectiveness of extended teaching/learning hours in schools by gathering community and student perspectives and evaluating their impact on student achievement. Three main questions are addressed: the adoption and maintenance of new timings in schools, perceptions of stakeholders (students, principals, school communities) compared to teachers, and the identification of positive impacts on students' educational experiences. Overall, the findings suggest minimal positive impact from the extended school hours, with concerns about the dominance of core academic subjects, poor teaching quality, reduced "time on task," and inconclusive evidence from international research regarding improved learning outcomes with longer school days.
